Solving the Unsolvable: Marine Sergeant Earns Meritorious Service Medal for Fleet-Wide Network Fix

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — The Meritorious Service Medal is rarely pinned to the chest of a sergeant. Typically reserved for senior officers and staff noncommissioned officers, the military decoration demands exceptional achievement that extends far beyond the scope of a standard billet. For Sgt. Michael Reta, earning the honor came down to solving a problem that military technicians had written off as impossible.

Reta, a network administrator with Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal on Sept. 17, 2026, after engineering a fleet-wide network fix for the experimental Tactical Edge Node-Man (TEN-M) system during Baltic Operations 2026. Maj. Gen. Farrell Sullivan, the commanding general of 2nd Marine Division, personally presented the award to Reta, using his address to the unit to highlight the sergeant's extraordinary technical leadership.

The breakthrough unfolded during the two-week multinational exercise in June, when 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance (LAR) Battalion received the prototype hardware. The system was designed to deploy dedicated servers directly to the tactical edge, but because the technology was still in its experimental phase, the battalion immediately hit a technical wall when trying to integrate it into the existing operational network.

“The biggest nuance was that there weren’t really any set guides, training, or other units to rely on to see the best lessons learned,” said 1st Lt. Jacob Grubbs, the communications officer for 2nd LAR. “We were starting from scratch.”

With no technical manuals to consult, discovering how the prototype functioned became an exhausting process of trial and error. Where others saw a dead end, Reta saw a challenge.

“My thought process for discovering the answer to this new piece of technology was simple: I used prior knowledge of the networks we already have and implemented the fundamentals of basic networking concepts,” Reta said.

Reta spearheaded the troubleshooting effort from the front. Rather than directing the work from behind a desk, he spent late nights shoulder-to-shoulder with his junior Marines inside server bays, walking them through complex configurations and testing setups line by line.

“He was at the forefront of working through the challenge,” Grubbs said. “Sgt. Reta led from the front, keeping his Marines right alongside him, leveraging his technical expertise, and putting in the extra hours late into the night until the problem was solved.”

After four months of persistent testing, Reta cracked the code. His solution not only brought 2nd LAR’s systems online ahead of schedule, but it also transformed the prototype into a battle-ready asset.

Reta did not stop at fixing his own unit's gear. He drafted detailed technical documentation and shared his network architecture across the fleet, directly supporting testing teams at the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory to ensure future fielding of the equipment across the entire service.

“When you’re a selfless leader, you’re trying to give the Marines as many resources as possible to execute the task,” Grubbs said. “You shouldn’t be doing things for personal decoration; you should be doing them for your unit and for the Marine Corps as a whole.”

For Reta, the medal represents more than his own long hours in front of terminal screens. “Being recognized with the Meritorious Service Medal means a lot to me,” Reta said. “I see it as a reflection of the Marines and leaders who have supported, challenged, and trusted me along the way.”
