Quick Thinking and Compassion: HYCF Employee Recognized for Life-Saving Actions
When an emergency unfolded at the Hawaiʻi Youth Correctional Facility (HYCF), Youth Corrections Officer Toaaliaʻi Tauga’s quick thinking and decisive action helped save a colleague’s life.
On March 1, 2026, Tauga was working in HYCF’s Bravo Module when he noticed a staff member who appeared to be choking while eating dinner. After realizing she couldn’t respond verbally and was holding her neck, Tauga immediately stepped in to help.
With the staff member’s permission, Tauga performed the Heimlich maneuver and successfully dislodged the obstruction, clearing her airway. His ability to remain calm and act quickly demonstrated the importance of preparedness, awareness and looking out for one another.
On September 15, HYCF staff and youth came together to celebrate Tauga’s heroic actions and presented him with a special message from Governor Green, recognizing his professionalism and compassion.
“His selflessness that day set an example that will continue to inspire others to act with the same resolve and humanity,” Governor Green wrote. “Individuals like him remind us of the dedication, strength and resilience that define Hawaiʻi.”
The recognition also highlighted the spirit of haʻaheo, or pride in public service, exemplified by Tauga’s readiness to act in a moment of need.
Tauga’s actions reflect the commitment of employees throughout the Hawaiʻi Department of Human Services and Office of Youth Services, who work each day to support the well-being of individuals and families across the state.
Mahalo to Toaaliaʻi Tauga for his courage, compassion and willingness to step forward when it mattered most.
