Jordan’s Cabinet suspends mandatory retirement for government employees
The suspension allows human resource management greater flexibility, enabling departments and institutions to determine retirements based on operational needs. The termination of employees who meet the criteria will now be handled by the relevant authority, reverting to previous practices that consider institutional requirements.
In another move, the Cabinet approved a financial settlement for King Abdullah University Hospital to cover outstanding medical treatment debts. The government will pay JD10 million to the hospital in December and commit to monthly payments of JD3 million from early next year until the estimated total of JD39.6 million is fully settled. The measure is intended to ensure the hospital can maintain sustainable service delivery.
The decision is part of a broader effort to clear accumulated arrears. Since its formation in September 2024, the government has paid nearly JD600 million of over JD1 billion in outstanding obligations, with plans to settle the remaining amounts over the next three years.
Additionally, the Cabinet approved JD10 million in funding for the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to cover tuition fees for students who qualified for grants or loans from the Student Support Fund, enabling them to register for second-semester courses in the 2025/2026 academic year.
Finally, the Cabinet extended a 75% exemption on fees imposed on horticultural agricultural goods intended for export, prolonging the benefit until December 31, 2026.
